Why are you writing?
Is there a story that you have to tell that you know people will benefit from? Do you just love writing and time just flies when you write? Do you have a hobby that you are passionate about and want to share your knowledge with other like-minded individuals?
Whatever the reason, if you are writing, then you have a calling. That book hiding inside of you has to be shared with the world, because each and every one of us has a story that needs to be told. This is a two way street. Writing has to be read by someone for the cycle to complete itself. If you are writing and no-one gets to read it, you are not an author, you are simply journaling.
So you write the book and yet when it comes to start sharing it with the world, you stall. Your inner critic starts hammering all sorts of doubts and blocks into your brain.
What if they hate it?
What if it is total rubbish and I am make a fool of myself? What if it never sells a single copy? What if I get a bad review? What if my family mocks me and questions my ability and expertise? Etc. Etc. Etc.
Okay, so let’s assume the worst case scenario and all of the above does happen, along with any other soul-destroying consequences unique to your situation. What are you going to do about it? Will you give up and never write again?
What does it matter if people knock you down, criticize your efforts and laugh at you? Do their opinions pay your bills? Do they care enough about you to pay your monthly expenses and help you deal with the daily challenges of life?
So please forget them. Just focus on selling the first 100 copies of your book. Then focus on writing another one and selling a 100 copies of that one, while selling another 100 of the first one. If it bombs, then write another book. Keep on writing. You are the only one that can make your dream come true. As you get more and more successful, those that keep trying to knock you down will intensify their efforts to crush your dream. Let it go! I know it hurts when people you care about seem intent on crushing your hopes, but eventually it will pass. And I promise you one thing; when that first royalty cheque hits your bank account, there is no greater feeling in the world.
You are a published and more importantly paid author! It is a thousand times more than what most people achieve in their lives.
