I asked my Facebook group this question yesterday. “So … what exactly is holding you back from publishing a book and getting it out there for people to read?”
The answers were enlightening and included self-confidence, money and time. So this morning I decided to address the ‘money’ issue so that we can eliminate that challenge altogether for some of you and help you get started in publishing a book.
To get your book onto Amazon you need the following:
- A correctly formatted document
- A Cover Design
Now you can pay someone to do this, but if your money tree is in the grips of an icy winter, this may be a problem so here’s the solution.
Formatting your document.
If you click on the link below, it will take you to a screen where you can download a copy of my tutorial “Format your MS Word Doc for Kindle”.
Follow the instructions in the tutorial and then save your document as a MS Word document. You do not have to worry about converting to html or mobi or epub. You are going to let Amazon do all the work for you. That tutorial takes you through the process formatting of your document. That is the first part of publishing a book done and dusted.
The key element to remember when publishing a book is that your cover is the first thing that people see when they are browsing on Amazon. It needs to grab their attention quickly amongst the millions of competing titles out there.
Log into your KDP account and start a new title. Fill in the details as required and then scroll down the page until you see the option to add a cover graphic. Click on the link that says “Launch Cover Creator Beta”.
The Cover Creator is easy to use and Amazon has very kindly provided loads of images and graphics that you can use to make your cover pop.
Upload your book
Amazon KDP accepts the following formats:
- Word (DOC or DOCX)
- HTML (ZIP, HTM, or HTML)
- MOBI (MOBI)
- ePub (EPUB)
- Rich Text Format (RTF)
- Plain Text (TXT)
- Adobe PDF (PDF)
The ONLY one you need to worry about is the first one. You have saved your book as a document file in MS Word or Open Office. Click on ‘Browse’ and find your file.
While the file is loading, go back up the screen and complete the book description, categories etc. Once your book has finished loading, Amazon will allow you to preview your book. When you are happy with the outcome, click on “Save and Continue”.
Rights and Pricing.
Complete all the information in the Rights and Pricing screen:
- Publishing Territories
- Price and Royalty per country
- Kindle MatchBook
- Kindle Book Lending
Then check the box accepting the terms and conditions, and then ‘Save and Publish”
You will have to wait while Amazon reviews your book but once they have approved it, it goes live in the Amazon Store. Now you are a published author!

Publishing a book has never been easier. Money is no longer an excuse.
